In most areas of my life, I’m a planner. Sometimes to a fault. Like, sometimes I get started on things so late in the game that my stress quadruples, or an opportunity will pass me by because I’m so busy planning and strategizing and, quite frankly, stalling, so the Universe just steps in and shoos my chance away so someone else can scoop it up.
When it comes to house projects, however, I’m one of two extremes. A too-focused planner or a jump-right-in-doer and it’s hard to say which is worse. Jeremy constantly has to remind me that I shouldn’t start the project that JUST popped into my head a moment ago because 1.) I already have ten projects in progress or 2.) I’ll probably change my mind and lose out on time and money if I go for it too soon and decide to redo it later.
I’m not saying it’s not okay to experiment and evolve your home’s style over time, but what I am saying is that, if you’re planning a complete overhaul of an entire room, it’s probably best to really think it through.
I decided that house project number one this year was our bedroom. It’s one area of our home that’s had me stumped for four years because I simply haven’t known what I wanted to do with it. I love so much of what I see out there in the stores, on Pinterest, and in catalogues, and the styles I love tend to be complete extremes – boho and moody, minimal and bright, vintage and rustic…
So after a few years of thinking it through, I decided I want our bedroom to be a cozy but minimal space. Even though I’m a naturally messy person, I struggle to really relax or focus until the room I’m in is cleaned up and clutter-free. Having this room, meant for sleeping and relaxation, generally free of too many knick-knacks or too much furniture will make it easier to clean up quickly and focus on winding down.
I’m also into the idea of keeping things light and using various tones of white. I think this gives off the bright, clean, and relaxing hotel-room vibe.
Another reason I really want to keep the room fairly neutral (color-wise) is so, if I spot seasonal bedding or accessories I like that may vary in color and pattern, it won’t clash with the rug, walls, curtains, and so on. By keeping all of those elements more neutral, I can easily swap out a buffalo-check comforter in the winter, or floral sheets in the summer!
So here’s where I landed when putting together our bedroom mood board. I’m happy to say that I’m sticking pretty closely to this as I slowly piece things together!
