A crisp chill is lingering in the air, the leaves are beginning to turn and fall to the ground, and we’ve had a few gloomy, rainy autumn days this week. Nothing makes us crave a hot cup of tea and a warm, freshly baked sweet just pulled from the oven more.
Why not combine the two and have the best of both worlds?
These spiced chai doughnuts from Fresh April Flours are the perfect way to start an autumn morning and are SO easy and quick to make.
A little spicy and a lot sweet.
You’re going to want to triple this recipe, friends.
Spiced Chai Doughnuts
Makes 6-8 | via Fresh April Flours
Ingredients
For the Doughnuts:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
- 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1 large egg (I use the water/oil/baking powder egg replacement)
- 2 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1/4 cup milk (I used almond)
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt (I used vanilla Greek yogurt)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Spiced Sugar Coating:
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
- 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350ºF.
- Spray a doughnut pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
For the Doughnuts:
- In a medium size bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, salt, and brown sugar. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together egg, butter, milk, yogurt, and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and blend until just combined and no dry pockets remain. Do not over-mix!
- Using a spoon (or by transferring the batter into a large Ziploc bag and snipping the corner off), fill each well 2/3 full.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges just start to brown. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool.
For the Spiced Sugar Coating:
- In a small bowl (make sure your doughnuts will fit for dipping!), combine the sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger until thoroughly mixed and set aside.
- In another bowl large enough to dip the doughnuts into, melt the butter completely.
- Dip each doughnut into the melted butter, coating all surfaces.
- Then, place buttered doughnut into the spiced sugar coating, flipping back and forth to coat all surfaces.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool until ready to serve.
Did I mention that these will make your kitchen smell so delightful that you’ll never want to take them out of the oven?
Trust me though, you’ll definitely want to remove these from the oven and savor every single bite.
Oh, how I love a good doughnut.
Happy baking, friends!
