After what felt like the winter that would never, ever end, it seems like Indiana went right on ahead and jumped straight into summer! We’ve been spending what free time we’ve had out in the yard and garden over the past few weeks, and words can’t describe how much I’ve missed it.
We took the time to rent a tiller and properly till up the garden area this year (I’ve only ever hand tilled it before) and then moved across the yard to till up an area next the house for what will eventually be a flagstone patio (this has been a slow, sloooow process, y’all.)
While J has been tackling the shoveling required for that project, I’ve been focused on getting seeds and starts in the ground. The rain over the past couple weeks has really caused things to sprout and grow like crazy, so I thought I should snap a few photos of what the beginnings of this year’s garden look like before it goes completely wild.
This year, I actually did some research and mapped out a plan before going overboard and trying to fit anything and everything I could get my hands on into what little space we have. Who knew that planning ahead would make the buying and planting process SO MUCH EASIER?!
I felt way more focused going in this year, and cutting back a little bit has me feeling far less stressed than I usually do (read: I wasn’t panicking a few hours into planting wondering where I was going to put loads of leftover starts!)
So, here’s a rundown of what we’ve got growing in our 2018 garden:
- Large and small tomatoes
- Red, yellow, and green bell peppers, as well as poblano and jalapeño peppers
- Eggplant
- Snap peas
- Onion
- Broccoli
- Lettuce and Swiss chard
- Spaghetti squash
- Brussels sprouts.
- Zucchini
- Carrots
- Green beans
- Cucumber
- Sunflowers.
- Strawberries
- All of the herbs.
I’m also hoping to plant some wildflowers and miniature pumpkins along the side of the house soon, once we get that area prepared. Those will be more of an experiment, as I’m not sure there’s enough sun there throughout the day to help plants thrive, but we’ll see!
Next on the agenda for our garden area is to level out the walking paths a bit and throw down some stone (and also invest in a new, less hassle-y hose!)
Also, I live for the few weeks a year when our roses out front are in bloom… and the first round of blooms is happening this week!
Are you gardening this year? I’d love to hear what you’ve got growing!
xo, Aly
